Antonia Papatzanaki: Unseen Brought to Light
Opening Reception: Friday, May 22, 2026, 5–8 PM
Mosaic ArtSpace is pleased to present Antonia Papatzanaki: Unseen Brought to Light, a solo exhibition by the renowned artist, featuring a series of light sculptures that explore the hidden structures of life through a visual language that bridges art, science, and technology.
Papatzanaki’s work draws inspiration from microscopic imagery—cellular formations, plant tissues, inorganic and organic systems—revealing a concealed microcosm that is both scientifically grounded and poetically transformed. Through stainless steel light sculptures she creates immersive environments where material and immaterial elements coexist.
As noted by art historian Yannis Bolis in the exhibition catalogue:
“The art of Antonia Papatzanaki is characterised by consistency, cohesion, breadth of inquiry, and constant experimentation. Artificial light is a dominant feature of her installations; it coexists with the natural, assuming a transcendental status, a mystical dimension. It is energy and matter, time and memory, and at the same time a powerful symbol of life, truth, and contemplation.”
In the light sculptures of the Structural and Xylem series, elements of an invisible world emerge through magnification and abstraction. These forms are defined by luminous intensity, rhythmic movement, and a complex interplay of light and shadow. Through this process, an unseen, intrinsic beauty is revealed, at times acquiring an almost metaphysical presence.
The coexistence of stainless steel and diffused light establishes a dynamic tension between solidity and immateriality, visibility and absence, fragility and resilience. Papatzanaki constructs a unified visual environment that invites multiple readings—both sensory and conceptual—while maintaining strong formal clarity and coherence.
At the core of her work lies an exploration of the deep interconnection between human beings and nature. Drawing on biological processes and scientific observation, the artist reflects on the shared structures that underpin life, while addressing the urgent need for a renewed awareness of our relationship with the natural world.
Antonia Papatzanaki was born in Chania, Crete and is a renowned Greek artist who lives and works in New York City. She has gained recognition for her light sculptures, delving into the material properties, morphological qualities, and conceptual dimensions of light, while continuously exploring the structure and nature of reality. She was educated at the Athens School of Fine Arts, the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna, and Pratt Institute in New York, where she acquired her Master of Fine Arts. Papatzanaki is the recipient of many prestigious awards, in addition to winning Panhellenic and international competitions for the creation of public art. Her outdoor public sculptures are permanently installed throughout Greece including her “Lighthouse” at Kato Patisia subway station in Athens Greece. Papatzanaki has exhibited widely in more than 100 solo and group exhibitions in Europe, Asia, and the United States. Her artistic contribution has been extensively documented in more than 300 articles and critical analyses, published in solo and group exhibition catalogues, as well as in books, art magazines and newspapers. Her work resides in numerous private collections, as well as the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Copelouzos Family Art Museum, the Vorres Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete, the American College of Greece, the Heraklion Museum of Visual Arts , and the Municipal Art Gallery of Chania.
With this exhibition, Mosaic ArtSpace continues its multidisciplinary mission by fostering dialogue around contemporary artistic practices through the presentation of local artists as well as artists from the greater New York metropolitan area and beyond, whose work expands the boundaries of expression. MAS strives to cultivate an environment in which the arts can flourish and meaningfully enrich the quality of life.
